Title: Big bad Venezuela...going deep deep cover, 007 incognito style. 8) 8) 8)
Post by: Awesome on December 15, 2016, 01:37:17 PM
Awesome flew into Medallo monday night, checked into usual hotel, then proceeded straight the nearest strip club.  I got stuck in Medellin longer than expected because of problems with atm card plus I lose my gotdamn mind in the strip club and spend way too much money.  Oh well Y.O.L.O baby!

On the trip down I had problems in the same airport I always have problems..Mexico f*cking City.  God I hate passing through DF!  This time some worker at the check in desk wouldn't give me my boarding pass until I showed him proof of a return ticked or onward travel, since I only had a one way ticket to Colombia.  I pulled up an itinerary on my phone in English and showed it to him and he was still being difficult not wanting to give me the boarding pass.  I was literally about to snatch him up by his pencil neck but he finally gave up my pass just in time to catch the plane.

I'm in Cucuta now at the shopping mall sipping a Juan Valdez waiting on a western union due to my atm card issues.  As soon as my money's right I'm catching the first taxi to la frontera.  I'm kinda nervous going into the unknown, possibly hostile territory, so we'll see how it goes.

Cucuta seems like a cool city.  Lots of hotties at the mall I'm at.  Not quite at the level of beauty you find in Medellin, but I don't think I've seen a single boob job or butt implants either.

Big bad Venezuela??? ::)

Last time I checked, Cucuta was squarely in Colombia--- why don't you head to San Christobal, Venezueula? If you're in Cucuta, it's not that far away, has twice the population of Cucuta and supposedly a lot more going for it. American, Delta, United and a dozen other airlines flying from the US all have direct flights to Venezuela.

Your trip reports always seem so full of unusual adventures and mishaps, unlike anyone elses here.

I'm beginning to see why you indicate you like staying amongst non natives in youth hostels while abroad so much.

Well, kudos to you for getting off the beaten path of the five major cities (Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla and Cartagena). Always wanted to try something in Colombia on the road less traveled.

Can't say much about Venezuela other than what I've read. If you do cross over, be safe/careful and don't over indulge in the booze, etc.  Have fun.

Take a couple of pics and post them.....what does the city look like compared to the bigger cities in Colombia?

I'm pretty sure Awesome decided to just walk across the border from Cucuta to Venezuela to avoid all the red tape of trying to fly directly there from another country. Which from what I've heard is pretty easy regardless of where you're from or what country printed your passport.

I've been to Cucuta and it reminded me of any other border town. A lot going on you notice and much more going on you probably don't. I will say this....the ladies there aren't bad at all!!! I've never tried to cross the border though. Closest I've been was some gas wholesale area where it looked like guys were crossing from Venezuela with gas cans to sell them in Colombia. It was REALLY weird and I'm still not sure exactly what was going on. That was years ago though.

I'm only in Cucuta to cross on my way to Venezuela, but I'm still waiting on some western union money.  Basically it's a big cluster with my funds situation right now.  I had to get a hotel and stay over in Cucuta until tomorrow.  I never had any intention of hanging out in Cucuta but I was forced to today.

Cucuta is a nice city from what I can tell.  The weather is a little bit warmer than Medellin but not too bad, I guess comparable to Cali.  Tonight I had a taxi take me down "El Malecon" which is a strip of bars, restaurants, discos, somewhat similar to la 70 in Medellin.  It's basically exactly like Medellin and Cali, people dressed in nice clothes out enjoying themselves.  I actually feel safer here than I do in Medellin.  In Medellin even if I'm in a "safe area" I always have the feeling like something is lurking out there, I honestly don't get that vibe here.  I think expat's described Medellin like that and I get exactly what he's talking about.  The looks of the local Cucuta women definitely doesn't disappoint at all.

I walked around El Malecon around 9ish and scoped out the scene.  There were definitely some hotties but they were all in the "groups" that people say are kind of a barrier to approaching women here.  I can break into these groups but it's easier later in the night when everyone's already good and loosened up.  I was there around 9 when everyone was just getting started.  Plus I wasn't really dressed for the occasion wearing some cargo shorts, a star wars t-shirt, a Rockets snapback baseball cap, and I'm in need of a haircut.  Basically I was looking like your average stoner from the Htown suburbs, plus I was solo dolo, no wingman, no friends, no nothing.  There's not even any hostels in this city unlike other Colombian cities where you can always find fellow gringos to hang out and explore with.  Even Bucaramanga has one hostel, Cucuta has zero.  So overall Cuctuta seems like a great place to hang out and meet women, especially if you're looking for a place with absolutely no other gringos.

So anyway since I knew I wasn't going to make any progress at the normal party district, you already know I caught a taxi to the strip club jaja!!  I was drinking it up with a couple of Venezolanas who come here to work and they told me that the BORDER IS F*CKING CLOSED until after new years.  Supposedly they might open it tomorrow just for the weekend so I'm going to ride down there to check it out, that is provided my money situation is fixed.  But if it actually is closed until next year, where does that leave me?  I don't f*cking know!!  I'll either just wait it out here in Cucuta, or go hang out in another part of Colombia for the next two weeks I guess.  The strippers I met plan on going back to Venezuela next week "de trucha" which means crossing illegally, and they said they can get me across like that.  So what do you guys think?  Should I illegally cross the Colombia-Venezuela border with some strippers I just met?

Yea San Cristobal does seem like a nice city to visit and I still might go there, but I'm mainly leaning toward Caracas.  But the way things are looking at this point, I'll be lucky to even get into Venezuela at all.

It leaves you with plenty of time to take some photos.....I don't know how they can just close the border crossing and trap Venezuelans in Colombia with no way to get back home.

I'm not really a picture taker.  There's nothing very scenic around here worth taking pictures of.  There's a couple of those cool looking "Yo Amo Cucuta" sign display things.  Where I was at by the "el malecon" there are a lot of cool looking christmas lights and decorations.  One thing I noticed and seems to be a thing in Colombia is a rollerblade track, where I guess people go to have rollerblade races.  This girl from Bogota I know in Texas once showed me pictures of some pro or semi-pro rollerblade team she was a part of in Colombia.  And just today in Cucuta I saw a whole "track" built just for roller blading.

I remember reading a while back when the border was closed the last time for a long period of time that it was only closed to Venezuelans and Colombians, that citizens of other countries could still pass.  I guess tomorrow I'll find out for sure.  I don't know if I have the stones to cross illegally into Venezuela.  I mean what if at some point someone finds out that my passport was never stamped?  That would give the cops a reason to detain me and probably make me give up some cash.

Yeah, on Dec. 12th CNN (see link below) reported that the Venezuelan/Colombia border would be closed for 72 hours.

"Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro ordered the border with Colombia be shut down for 72 hours beginning Dec. 12. Maduro said that criminal gangs are returning to Venezuela with large amounts of 100-bolivar bills, which Maduro ordered be phased out of circulation over the weekend in response to Venezuela's sky-high inflation."

Do NOT try to enter Venezuela illegally. The U.S. Passport you've got is your best friend right now. I don't know for sure but I think it is a good bet you've got a much better chance of getting over the border as compared to your average Venezuelan who will be suspected of smuggling currency (or goods) back into Venezuela.

Maybe get that haircut in Colombia and dress up a bit when you go to cross so you don't look like a stoner/backpacker. Again, that U.S. passport is like gold to you right now. Don't lose it.

What the heck happened to your bank cards? When I was in Rio, Bank of America shut down my debit card because they suspected fraud activity. All I did was use it at a bar at 1am in the morning! I had let the bank know before I left the USA that I would be in Brazil and planned to use the card there.

Credit/Debit card fraud runs rampant in Rio. You wouldn't believe how many times my card got cloned and my bank account got wiped out before I actually moved there. So American and European banks tend to be pretty wary of any transaction in Brazil if you don't inform them you're traveling there beforehand. The worse part is even when the bank overnights you another card, it has to go through the "snail speed" customs clearance process because it's an international shipment. I've waited 2 weeks to get another card after my bank deactivated a cloned one. When I actually moved to Rio and got a Brazilian bank account, making an ATM withdrawal required the card, a 6 digit pin and your fingerprint. No more cloning issues.

Too bad you won't be able to make it across Awesome. I was really looking forward to hearing about your experiences there. Anywhere in Venezuela is definitely off the beaten path for most of us.

NOOOO

A Mormon or something like that from Utah who was in VZ to preach I guess was arrested for being a spy.
Maduro's government is crazy and if you get caught, well, would hate to be you .

We were cruising around the "A,B, C Islands" Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao and thereabout earlier this year, from where you can occasionally see Venezuela on a really clear day. The Captain, more than half jokingly asked: "I don't suppose you want to make a landing in Venezuela?" We certainly didn't. The islands and mainland nations close  to Venezuela won't even put US dollar bills in the ATMs and they're real careful in the banks as well.

They know that when inflation continues to run in excess of 1600% a year. the USD will keep pace or exchange even better later on--a safe haven. Merchants are all but terrified of desperate Venezuelans coming by boat and ripping them off. I guess if baby formula, diapers and a lot of bare necessities were at times unavailable and the overall infrastructure a corrupt, broken down shamble, I'd be desperate too.

Having a nation's economy 95% based on oil wasn't a good idea. They didn't learn from the 1800's Irish potato famine, that's for sure.

Yea the news reports say the border's only closed until sunday or monday.  I don't know why those girls last night told me until next year.  Anyway I'm going to go to try to cross today just to see if the closure only applies to Colombians and Venezuelans.

My money situation is basically fixed now.  Yes my card was blocked but now everything seems to be ok.

As Maria noted, don't even think about crossing illegally. Lots of disagreement on P.L. Uniform agreement you should NOT cross illegally into Venezuela.

I made a trip to Guadalajara, Mexico about 10 years or so ago. A few days after I returned to the U.S. I got a call from my credit card company. They said, "Mr. Lavoe. Did you purchase (approx.) $1,000 of construction equipment on your recent trip to Mexico."  Of course, I hadn't. They removed the charges.

It's arguable if you should try to even enter Venezuela LEGALLY. To a lesser but still significant degree, the same holds true of Argentina, which is a bit odd. The media and govt's there have fed the people there such a bunch of 99% BS for so long, that a lot of the people there hate our people, and you may be treated more than just rudely verbally---they may physically assault and rob you for simply being a US citizen. I don't wear a lot of red, white and blue Ralph Lauren outfits when traveling abroad. ....

It's a shame, because there are parts of the world, including suprisingly, parts of the middle east, and Asia's Vietnam, where we've actually been at war yet they're still able (intelligent)  enough to differentiate what they feel our govt and in turn our military and business sectors do,  from what US citizens walking around do.

Hell, for that matter, you might well be treated more nicely in an Iranian cafe, ordering a cup of coffee than you'd be treated ordering a coffee in Paris, France, especially if don't speak flawless French.

But especially with taxi cab drivers and the odd unusual person who treats me rudely when I'm visiting abroad, I very happy that a few, choice English phrases are English only and understood and oft used internationally, most certainly the phrase F_CK YOU!!! :o

Where did you take the pic of the Brosty chicken place on your profile pic?

That pic is from Paisalandia just a stock photo from google.

Oh man tonight I got played like a CHUMP!  I can't believe it this hasn't happened to me in a long time.  I was with this chick and I was like 75% sure I was getting laid but some other guy I think took her from me.  I can deal with the letdown but it's still funny to think about.

So latest update, mission is aborted, completely.  I have to go home.  The main reason is my grandma is sick.  The second reason is I wasn't getting into Venezuela anyway, truth be told.  It would've been a renegade mission from beginning to end.  First of all paying coyotes who bribe the border officials to pass you to the other side, then I guess promising to make sure you get to a safe point.  Then...you just keep freestyling, try to make it to a heavily populated area as to blend in easier.  Then once there settled into a nice rental, living day to day knowing that if you ever get checked by a cop that you could have some problems.  I went to the border and they told me that the border is CLOSED, and nobody can pass.  Then they informed me that US passport holders can't pass at all without a VISA that can only be obtained at a Venezuelan consulate or embassy, in my case it would have meant going to Bogota.  So yea I'm on my way home.

Anyway since this is my last day in Cucuta I figured I might as well hit the strip club.  So sleazy I know, I apologize.  So I'm drinking it up with what turns out to be nothing but Venezuelan chicks.  I guess the incentive to work in Colombia and earn in Colombian money draws a lot of exceptionally attractive women from all parts of Venezuela.  Who'da thunk it?!  But I figure I'm just where destiny put me, I'm on cloud 9!  So I go outside the club to smoke a cigarette and I see these somewhat hoodrat looking girls yelling and chasing each other, and I just so happened to think one of them was cute/sexy.  So next thing I'm rapping with this girl and she works in the bar next door and I invite her a beer.  Then this pretty boy looking dude comes by selling concert tickets.  Somehow they talked me into buying a ticket to the Nejo concert going on that night.  The chica named "Estrella"(yea I know) claimed that she was already going to the concert with her friends, the ones she was fighting with outside.  So I agree to go with them to this concert, plus I'm a Nejo fan.

So she tells me to wait for her while she "gets ready" so I wait drinking my beer in the almost empty bar.  I'm sitting there the whole time thinking it's like a 50% chance she ditches me/doesn't ditch me.  So once I'd slowly finished my beer I was getting up to step outside and she appeared from somewhere all dolled up, even more than she already was.  So it was me, her, her two hot girl friends, and a guy that was with one of the friends.  So we show up to the outdoor concert ground and right away she greets some guy she knows.  Damn not looking good.  Then the guy's like a total rooster, a alpha male type.  Like some very tough competition I can't even lie.  But I didn't let it get to me.  She was back and forth from me to him back and forth the whole night.  It was a little bit awkward but I was still  having a blast.  I bought a half bottle of guaro and I was sharing with people.  Then the rico suave guy sold me a joint lol.  Then when I went to the bathroom I was smoking the joint in the port a potty line and some guy CHECKED ME.  Yea he told me basically "do you mind smoking that over there".  I felt terrible, so I put it out real quick.  Then the pretty boy who sold me the ticket in the first place was right be me so I gave him some of the guaro bottle I had and this dude filled up like a big ass cup he had.  This dude wasn't stupid!  Then I was trying to get in on his conversation with some hot chicks when some guy tried to cut in front of me in the port a potty line.  I turned around and the guy was already standing in front of me.  I was like "PARCERO"!  I was tipsy by this point.  "Usted llego antes de mi?"  And the guy was like I don't know.  I guess he thought I wasn't going to say anything.  Then I asked him again "entonces porque estas en frente de mi?", "llegaste con el?" I pointed the guy in front of me.  The guy became friendly and got back behind me and it was all good.

So anyway I get back to my girl and she's back with her girl friends, and everything is good.  We're dancing, she's grinding all on me.  Her girl friends making conversation with me kind of pushing her onto me.  But that rooster guy is still there but he's distracted dancing with some other hot chick.  And I could see my girl peeking out of the corner of her eye checking what he was doing.  So long story short, I had a blast, even with the guy who cockblocked me, thanks to him I got high and I gave him a lot of alcohol.  He seemed to like me a lot and we exchanged numbers.  Guys like him are great to have as buddies because they attract women at all times.  So I was tired of playing the waiting game, competing with this guy to see who was going to end up with her.  That is if even that was even on her agenda, I have no idea, but her amigas were definitlely looking disappointed that she paid so much attention to that guy.  It turns out they're all Venezuelan, the girl, all her friends, and the alpha male guy.  They're all from Venezuela, so I guess they tend to stick together.  Oh yea I got the girl's number too, and I have the feeling I would've got lucky 9 out of 10 times(maybe) if we hadn't bumped into that guy.  And the bad part is it was close, it was really close.  If he would've stuck with the other girls he was dancing with she would've been mine!  Lol.  I still had a blast.  Tomorrow I take the bus back to Medallo, then fly back home.

Then I asked him again "entonces porque estas en frente de mi?", "llegaste con el?" Awesome.I will make a deal with you. You post pictures of yourself in the strip joint in Cucuta (they are all hookers by the way), I will post a picture of me drunk doing a pole dance in Sabadell  Club in Manizales. the one and only  time (so far) I ever went into a strip Club in Colombia.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buquipgIjpo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buquipgIjpo)

My friend- a Colombian-who was taking care of me, took the pictures. He sent them to me the next day. Man was I drunk. Couldnt remember anything. I was shocked when I saw the pictures- but then just laughed my head off.

But when I get drunk like that in Colombia, itis under controlled conditions- never alone with strangers in unknown places.

Its not that embarassing-MUDD has already seen them. A mutual freinds girlfriend  whoI sent the pictures to showed him and a bunch of other people in Medellin.

I sent them to a bunch of people, exceptmy girlfriend and as couple other "amigas" of course.

In case anyone asks..nothing hapened with the girls..just a fun night out. I wouldnt be caught dead even "Double Bagging" one of those women.

It should be easy for you to drink under controlled conditions since you live in Colombia.  As a tourist it's not as easy to control your conditions and still have fun.

And how do you know you didn't do anything with the strippers if you don't even remember what happened?  Jaajaja!!

Yea I definitely didn't get the girl, no lies there.  Another thing, looking back at last night I think I was exaggerating when I said I was almost sure I was "getting laid".  As I think back she never did anything to really lead me on like something was going to happen.  At no point were we holding hands or kiss or anything really affectionate.  At the most we danced some sexy reggaeton type dancing.  For all I know even if that guy hadn't been there, she may still have only thought of me as a "friend", I mean we had literally just met like 30 minutes before going to the concert together.  I do remember at one point asking her what she was doing afterwards and she clearly told me "nothing", which I meant to mean she was open to hang out with me afterwards.  But that guy wouldn't leave, and I'm too old to play the "waiting game" where you basically try to outlast the other guy competing for the same chick at the end of the night.  I've been in that situation more times than I'd like to recall, it's so sleazy and degrading, but it's always the guy who's sleazier and more desperate who gets laid in that scenario.  I used to date a chick who used to do that to me on a regular basis.  I swear she either got turned on by it, or got some sick pleasure from it, or both, from making guys compete for her.  She would always tell me to meet up with her and her girlfriends at a bar or danceclub and I'd show up to find her flirting with some guy, then she'd see me and she'd come jump on me and from there the stupid drunken games would begin.  We would always end up at the end of the night having crazy intense animal sex, but damn she would make me work for it.  Anyway the moral of the story is, swallowing your pride and degrading yourself is never something you should have to go through to get some p*ssy.  I learned this the hard way.   ;D

Why would I post a picture?  I don't need to prove anything to anybody.  I just post my experiences, whether or not people believe me is none of my concern.

Newsflash ra, you're not important.  Nobody here cares if you believe their story or not.  Maybe you're important at other areas in your life, but here on pl you're just a peon, a scrub.

We pressure ourselves too much on these trips. We feel the clock ticking and it is like we have to make something happen before we are heading back to the airport. I know because I have been there too.

The best thing to do (advice I don't always follow) is to let go and just have fun. Stay out of the results and let nature take its course.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. If this lady was just going to be another "notch" in your belt than you truly lost nothing. You had a good time. If you actually LIKE this lady you did get her contact information so that is positive.

The "rooster" guy was a local guy with pre-established rapport with her. Hard to fight against that on the first night you met her.  She might have liked you but knew you were gone the next day and didn't want to be another notch in your belt and/or look compromised to her fiends. Don't know for sure as I was not there...but possible.

Latest update.  I'm here in Medellin sick as hell.  I woke up this morning feeling like crap.  I'd sat next to sick girl on the bus from Cucuta and she was coughing the whole 15 hr trip.  I'm sure that's how I got sick.  The hotel I usually stay at in Medellin didn't have any vacancies when I arrived so I tried another place and got a much bigger room with a jacuzzi for the same price, so that was cool, plus I'm in a better part of town.  But farther away from the strip clubs, which is probably a good thing.

So I know this sounds stupid, but tomorrow I'm heading back to Cucuta.  When I was at the bus station in Cucuta I met these guys who said they can get me across to Venezuela no problem.  These are some pretty shady looking guys so I'm maybe 50% sure that they can deliver on their promise, but I figure it's worth a shot.  I'm already like 90% sure one of the guys stole a $20 dollar bill from me.  He was "helping" me put my money into a plastic bag that's meant to go down in your shoe in case you get robbed.  I know there was 80 bucks there but when I got to Medellin and checked it there were only 60 bucks.  When I see him again I plan on mentioning that 20 bucks "disappeared" from me, not accusing him, but letting him know that I know.  Then if they don't get me across with no problems like they promised, I might become a little more angry with them.  I might at least cuss the guy out and tell the cops at the bus station that the guys scammed me.

Yea for one thing the girl wasn't super hot.  She was "hoodrattish" looking, but she was a very nice person.  I think she was at least giving me a "chance" to win her over, but I just couldn't pull it off.  I found her attractive but she's not the kind of girl you'd want to be seen with at a nice restaurant or nice place.  She was kind of a "barrio girl", not that there's anything wrong with that but it is what it is.  Another thing that had crossed my mind is what if she ends up being a "prepago", as in she asks for money to sleep with me?  Anyway I still had a great time.  One thing is if I ever party in Cucuta again I'd prefer to meet some actual Colombianas instead of only Venezolanas like I did this last time.

"Sounds stupid"? LOL,  Even if this pap was true, it'd be most moronic tale from an already lengthly list.

A desperate man child, leaving a relatively safe area already overridden by hot babes, to have desparados smuggle him like the mule he is, into an already desparate country. Don't forget to send us a post card, or using one of the three cell phones you claim to carry while traveling, along with a few snapshots.

Anybody with half a brain and that's what it takes to want to go there, would be a lot better off taking a flight from the USA, or if in Colombia already, would know there's plenty of flights into Venezuela available for dirt cheap there.

My main issue is the visa required for US passport holders would be a major pain in the arse to obtain.  If not for the visa dilema I would've just flown straight into Venezuela.

My main concern now seems to be entering and getting my passport stamped.  If I can pull that off then I'm home free, for the most part.  I still wouldn't have the visa but hopefully that won't matter once my passport is stamped.

At the Bucaramanga bus station now and it's a hundred times nicer than the Cúcuta bus station.  From just observing passing through on a bus Bucaramanga seems to be a very nice, modern looking city.

Update- Awesome is now in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, it's official.  I successfully smuggled myself into the country, then freestyled my way to San Cristobal.

So I arrived to the Cucuta bus station around 1pm then I didn't see the shady guys right away, so I decided to cross the border on my own since I'd heard that it had been re-opened.  So I take a taxi to the San Antonio bridge and wait in a LONG line to get my exit stamp from the Colombian border office.  Then I crossed the bridge to the Venezuelan office and was DENIED, they told me I needed the visa and couldn't enter without it.  So guess what Awesome did after that?  I walked out of the office and proceeded to walk straight into Venezuela.  That was a hell of a spur of the moment decision to make, walk back to safety and legality in Colombia, or proceed into the unknown and just go 100% RENEGADE.

I walked down the main strip of San Antonio looking for a taxi to take me to the bus station and I must say it seemed like a bit of a dreary place, not very inviting at all.  I walked by a few taxis offering to drive straight to San Cristobal, but I wanted to take a bus to lessen the chance that I get checked at a police checkpoint.  So I found a taxi to take me to the "bus station" which is a few little buseta looking things with no name brand on them, no luggage storage underneath, and no ticket counter, you just walk up to the driver and pay him what he asks for, in my case 2k cop jaja.  We end up passing two checkpoint/toll booth looking spots with no problems, I was kind of sweating it hoping that the cops didn't board the bus and ask to see ID's.

So once we past the second check point we were smooth sailing for the hour long drive through the mountains into San Cristobal.  I already like this place.  I found a really nice place to stay.  It's like an apartment suite, with a kitchen, bedroom, ac, hot water, and the lady who runs the place is super nice.  She helped me out with the taxi driver and even got on his ass for charging me too much lol.  Then she cooked me a couple arepas con huevo with some hot chocolate and she didn't say anything about charging me, so I guess it was free I don't know.  I'm going to sleep GOOD tonight, then tomorrow I've got to exchange my money into Venezuelan currency, then just go exploring.  Whoop whoop!!    ;D 8)

Oh yea and the taxi driver is from Caracas and he was telling me that San Cristobal is way better than Caracas and he claims that the women of San Cristobal are the most beautiful of Venezuela, kind of like the reputation Medellin has in Colombia.  And I think he might be right just from judging what I've seen on fb.  The San Cristobal women seem to be very similar to the Paisa women.  I'll find out for sure tomorrow.

Your writing is very descriptive but how about a pic of the place. jajaja

Oh man I could've taken a bunch of cool pictures today.  I kind of regret not taking any.  After leaving Bucaramanga I slept until we arrived to the town of Berlin which seems like just a village up in the mountains where there's a bus stop with a couple of eateries  and some other mountain village stuff going on.  The mountainous landscape leaving Berlin(which is cold) is simply beautiful.  I puffed on a  joint I had at the stop in Berlin so I kind of zoned out on the beauty of the scenery riding through the mountains.  I wanted to take some pics but when I'm high and in my zone I don't like to fool with stuff like that.  Then the scene at the border crossing was crazy and chaotic, I should've taken some pics there too.  Then actually entering into Venezuela the scenery was trippy, not in any type of beautiful way, more of a gritty, 3rd worldish, dreary type of scene.

Tomorrow I might try to take a some pics for you guys, maybe.  I'm a lazy mofo so don't get your hopes up.

Well first day in Venezuela.  It's a big hassle trying to change my money.  I had a guy come by but he only does deposits into a (Venezuelan)bank account which I don't have.  Right now there's some weird thing going in with the cash situation in Venezuela.  Some other guy was going to take me to his house because his daughter was going to change my money for cash but not at a good rate, but the owner of the hotel stopped me and told me not to trust the guy.  Then the hotel owner, his daughter, and his wife took me out to the shopping mall to get a sim card for my phone, then to the grocery store to buy some food, then they exchanged a little bit of cash for me.  I thought that was super nice of them.  There were some beautiful women at the mall.

People have been telling me a lot about cool touristy things to do around here.  The guy who came to change my money asked me if I go out to the discotecas and we exchanged numbers so he might be a good contact to have to show me around, maybe meet some nice women.

Dude, why don't you read the thread?  I'm in San Cristobal.  The guy who came to exchange my money claims to work for some tourism agency and says he knows where to do some hang gliding stuff.  Then there's a town by here called La Fundacion where there are tours through the mountains and some real cool waterfalls.

Am I sure I'm in Venezuela?!!  Wtf kind of question is that?  Lmao!!  I've never been more sure of anything in my life.  This older lady who runs the hotel where I'm at is super nice, very motherly type.  She cooks 3 or 4 meals a day and is constantly feeding me, not for free but extremely cheap.  Then the owners of the hotel seem to like me.  They went out of their way to drive me around and take me to buy a few things.  The daughter was telling me all about when she was studying abroad in Europe and showed me pics of her trips to Morrocoy and Salto de Angel.  She even used her cedula so I could buy a sim card because they don't accept passports, unlike Colombia where anybody can buy a sim card.

It's going to take a while to get my bearings about this place.  The taxis don't use meters so you have to haggle with the taxi drivers.  I can definitely understand the Spanish spoken here better than the Paisa Spanish.  This place is like Colombia but weirder.  It will probably take me about a week before I feel confident to really start moving around freely and meeting people.

Latest update - I'm getting the hell out of Venezuela.  The main reason is because I'm here illegally and I read this story about an American being held on some bs charges of "terrorism and espionage" and not being allowed a fair trial or even to see his lawyer.  So as of now if I get checked by a cop or official I have two strikes against me 1 I'm American with a US passport, and 2 I'm here illegally with no visa and no entry stamp on my passport, which gives them legal cause to detain me if they find me out.  So tomorrow I'm catching a bus back to the border and hopefully I'll be able to slip back into Colombia unmolested.  Then I'll catch a bus from Cucuta back to Medellin(again), and then fly back home before the new year.

One advantage I do have is that I was actually born in Mexico and I can obtain a Mexican passport which would allow me to fly right into Venezuela with no problem at all, and I wouldn't have to worry about getting hassled by the government like this Joshua Holt guy is getting railroaded just because he's American.  So I'm going home, getting my Mexican passport asap then I'm on the first plane to Caracas baby!  Then I'll upload all the pics of me in Los Roques, Morrocoy, Salto De Angel with some big booty mamacitas, yeah baby!!  Or if I get detained tomorrow while trying to slip out of the country, you guys might be reading about me on the news some time soon.

One thing is for sure, the cash situation around here is F*CKED!  If you have $100 usd worth of Venezuelan currency you need a damn grocery bag to carry it around in.  It's like piles and piles of cash.  Most Venezuelans aren't even using cash right now, only bank cards.

In case anyone was wondering Awesome is not locked up in Venezuelan prison.  I successfully made it out of the country without having my passport checked.  I got nervous on the bus ride back to San Antonio(border town) when the bus had to pass through a checkpoint, but we rode right through it, didn't even stop.  Then I had to walk past a bunch of Venezuelan border cops on my way back across the border.  Then at the Colombian customs office I had to bribe them 100k cop to stamp my passport.  They didn't stamp it at first because I didn't have any stamp from another country following the Colombian exit stamp.  Then a shady looking unmarked "taxi" took me to some little shady neighborhood right next to the border to exchange the grocery bag full of bolivares(Venezuelan cash) back into Colombian pesos.  I was glad to find somebody to buy them from me.  I was scared nobody would want the bolivares and that I would just be stuck with them but luckily I got them exchanged.

Overall I was just glad to get out of Venezuela, after reading the Joshua Holt story.  That just shows that a government that is hostile towards the US can and will make an example out of an American citizen within it's borders.  They can plant contraband on you and charge you with some complete bs and there's nothing you can do about it.  You basically have no rights.  I'd go back to Venezuela, but only with a passport from a country other than the US.

Well I'm back in the good 'ol USA, arrived last night.  I went out and partied pretty hard my last night in Medellin with this black chick that I'd met during my last trip to Colombia.  We went bar hopping around el centro and had a blast.  One thing I noticed hanging out with a black girl is I felt just a tiny bit awkward when I noticed that in the places we went to we were the only interracial couple there.  She didn't seem to feel any awkwardness at all which was nice, since many times black women in the US that I've dated are constantly perceiving that they're being discriminated against or treated differently.  In my very limited experience with black Colombians I've never seen one of them carrying a chip on their shoulder or feeling resentment similar to what many African Americans seem to feel on a regular basis.  We had such a great time that I missed my morning flight and had to pay a few hundred bucks to catch another flight back home.

Right now it's 40 minutes left until 2017 and I'm just here chilling with friends, family, and neighbors shooting fireworks having a good time.  I'm already gathering information on how I'm going to apply for a MX passport and take my next trip to Venezuela, LEGALLY this time.  DAMN IT I wish I would've done that BEFORE I went this last time.  I didn't know that Venezuela is so serious about the whole visa thing.  So keep a look out for Big Bad Venezuela part 2 coming soon to a theater near you...

An currency exchange in Texas is NOT going to give somebody THIRTY THOUSAND bolivares for $11 US dollars.

Try again troll.

To be fair though that photo doesn't prove that I was actually in Venezuela.  I could've acquired those bills in Cucuta, since there are plenty of people there who will exchange cop/usd/bolivares at the black market rate.  But I promise that pic was taken in San Cristobal, Venezuela.

I don't know why you think you would have an issue in Texas.  I see interracial couples all the time in Texas and nobody seems to care.

One factor that makes me feel a tiny bit awkward when I'm out with a black chick is that it's just not very common to see a white/hispanic guy with a black female.  Most interracial couples are a black guy with a white/hispanic female, not the other way around.

For the most part people don't care. But there is the rare circumstance where someone will openly express a problem with it.....and that's usually black women.

Here in California  when my wife and I get nasty looks, it's usually from black women or black men..I've  never asked what problem they have with us being together, so I really don't know what it is, other than maybe they don't approve of her being with a white man....

Lmao!!  Sad but true.

But you can't blame black women for resenting the fact that so many black men are actively seeking to date white women instead of dating black women.  I mean I'm not exaggerating when I say that most black men I know openly admit that they'd rather date white/hispanic women.  If I were a black women I'd be mad too.  lol  But with that being said I know plenty of black women who are awesome, happy, positive-minded, loving, beautiful people, so it's pretty easy to avoid the angry ones.

Ok I finally made it to Caracas.  I just arrived today on the bus from San Cristobal and I've been WALKING the city all freaking day.  My feet hurt, my knees hurt, my whole body hurts from the waist down.  I haven't walked this much in a very long time.

While I was back in the US I obtained my MX passport and it's a good thing, as opposed to trying to bus it to Caracas with only an unstamped US passport.  I got pulled off the bus by the "guardia" at a checkpoint and thoroughly searched and interrogated.  They even went through my text messages on my phone.  Needless to say I was scared, thinking I was going to jail for being a Yankee spy terrorist, but luckily I think they were mostly looking for drugs so they let me get back on the bus.

Just basic observations, I like what I see so far.  Caracas just seems like any normal city to me.  I haven't felt unsafe at all.  And I haven't seen all the starvation, suffering, and chaos that people always say about this place.  There are restaurants and supermercados all over the place and they're full of food.  It just feels like being in Colombia, basically.  One contrast from Medellin, here I haven't seen the hoodlums, the crackheads, the homeless beggars roaming the downtown streets.  I flew into Medellin again and again I had to stay there an extra few days straightening out some issues with my crappy bank.  Anyway I'll be here for a while and I'll keep you guys updated.  And don't worry I won't be getting drunk or doing any stupid stuff.

Oh yea and my hotel has plenty of toilet paper.  They even have a little spray thing next to the toilet that I guess is used to give yourself a little squirt of water to make sure you're extra clean.  The hotel I stayed at in San Cristobal in December had plenty of toilet paper too.

I was wondering around looking for a place to wash my laundry and I stumbled onto this street full of military monuments, buildings and a huge long drill pad with bleachers which I guess is for military demonstrations.  All that stuff looked pretty impressive.  I took these pics but the stupid image hosting turned them sideways for some reason.  I tried to fix it but couldn't, sorry.

LMAO!!!! I thought exactly the same thing for the first few months after I moved to Brazil. But according to the Cariocas it's actually to spray any "debris" off the sides of the bowl before you flush. You can use it for what you're describing but just make sure to flush first. Really sucks if you drop that thing down into the toilet, have to go fishing for it and then having to clean it off. I've been there.  :o

Have fun down there.

Oh ok that's what it's for.  Good thing I haven't used it yet lol.

I'm pissed right now.  I rode the subway to downtown and back to buy a chip for my phone and I somehow lost it on the way back.  I didn't even realize it was gone until I got back to my hotel.  The subway ride on the back we were packed in there like sardines and either it fell out of my pocket or I got pickpocketted.  Now I have to buy a whole new phone.  Agghh!

Ok I didn't have to buy a new phone after all, since I have like 5 phones with me one of them was unlocked and works with the movilstar chip.  That's good because the cheapest smartphone they had was over a hundred bucks, unlike Colombia where you can get a cheapy smartphone for like 30 bucks.  I don't want to be wasting money here because I can't just go to any atm to pull out cash unlike Colombia.  When I need more cash I'm going to have to travel my arse all the way to Colombia to hit the atm, then, exchange it into usd, then travel my arse all the way back to Caracas.  I got this guy who's going to help me open a Venezuelan bank account tomorrow so I'll be able to sell some bitcoin for Venezuelan money and have it loaded onto my Venezuelan atm card so I won't have to go all the way to Colombia just to access cash.

I walked to the mall close to where I'm staying which happens to be right next to all those military buildings which I guess would be like the pentagon of Venezuela.  The mall was crawling with military personnel in uniform.  If felt kinda weird being among all those soldiers who are probably trained to hate gringos.  Part of the mall had a big shiny grocery store full of food, American style.  It seemed ironic since right around the corner in the working class neighborhoods people are lined up at the little supermercados to use their foodstamp coupon vouchers to get their daily rations of food.  I'm fascinated by this whole weird "socialist" system.  At my hotel the wifi only works in the lobby so I have to be down here to use the internet, which is kinda cool because I see everybody coming and going.  There are a lot of soldiers staying here which I thought was odd until I realized we're right by the Venezuelan pentagon.  There is also a contigent of Chinese people staying here.  I'm wondering what the hell they're doing here.  I'm going to ask somebody sooner or later.  Needless to say there were gorgeous Venezolanas everywhere I looked in the mall, and basically everywhere else around this place.  I'm falling in love like every 5 minutes in this city.

I think I'm going to erase those photos I took out of my phone in case I get searched and interrogated by the "guardia" again and they wonder why the hell I'm going around taking pictures of their military installations.  Awesome 007 deep cover signing out...

They even have a little spray thing next to the toilet that I guess is used to give yourself a little squirt of water to make sure you're extra clean.

They heard you were coming. It's mouthwash.

Dude, did you not see those fotos I posted of the military drill pad, and the monuments, and the big fancy military academy building?

It's funny you mention the spray thingy by the toilet, I was just about to post a pic of it along with a pic of a Hugo Chavez wooden statue that was for sale in the mall, but the stupid image hosting website turns all of my fotos sideways.

What do you want me to post fotos of?  The shopping mall?  The people packed like sardines in the subway?  People standing in lines to get their daily bread?  I can't believe you bozos really think that I'm making all this stuff up jaja!  Give me a specific request for some fotos and I'll do my best to accommodate you.  Damn I'm still pissed I lost that phone today!   >:(

I'm still in the hotel lobby and this soldier was eyeballing me, probably wondering why I have this cool shiny laptop and a bunch of phones sitting around my chair.  Little does he know I'm just an unorganized stoner who likes to play around with electronics jaja.

Repost the military base with Venezuelan flag with you with a big sign saying "Awesome" in front of it.
You can use the sign to cover your face if you want.

I don't plan on going back to the military zone any time soon and I'm semi scared of heights so I'm not in a hurry to do the cable car thing, but I'll try to get you a pic of something that only exists in Venezuela.  Maybe I'll go back to the mall and snap a pic of that wooden Hugo Chavez statue with my Rockets hat on his head jaja..

Well I had my first rumba in Venezuela.  I was downtown in the Sabanagrande district which is this big promenade type walkway with stores and restaurants where I chatted up this cute morena.  I asked her for her phone number and she told me she didn't have a phone, but I gave her my number.  Of course I didn't believe she didn't have a phone and I assumed she was just blowing me off in a nice way.

So that night I was chilling in the hotel lobby not planning on doing anything and she calls me from her amigas's phone inviting me to the movie theater nearby where we met.  It was around 8pm and here I go walking to the metro station down the street from my hotel.  Now this Caracas, supposedly the most dangerous city in the world and basically walking around at night is a complete no-no, not only that this girl doesn't exactly come from a high income background.  So I'm walking down the street at night thinking, "hmm what am I getting myself into?".  So I arrive at the shopping mall where the theater is at and she's happy to see me.  I buy my ticket and we take our seats by her amiga.  During the movie she's feeding me popcorn and candies and we're sharing a pepsi, enjoying the movie.  It was the 50 shades of gray sequel, which was almost like watching soft-porn lol.

So after the movie her and her amiga were waiting on some guy with a car to pull up and take them out to a discoteca and they invited me to go along.  This is where I thought "maybe I should quit while I'm ahead" instead of going with them and some guy out partying.  These girls seemed very cool and I didn't get any weird vibes from them like they were setting me up to get robbed or kidnapped, so good ol' Awesome agrees to go along with them.

So the guy friend pulls up in a 90's model toyota camry and we get in.  The guy is kinda dorky but is totally cool otherwise and I could tell right away that they weren't going to rob me.  So we try to go to this one disco but they don't let us in because I'm wearing shorts, so the guy drives me back to hotel, which is nearby, so I can change clothes real quick.  It was a shame because there were some serious hotties going into the initial club we tried to get into.  So, anyway we get back to the second disco we'd tried to get into and they let us in and all is going good.  We get a bottle of vodka with the ice and juice set up and we start drinking it up.

Of course the whole time I'm thinking "what are the chances I'm getting laid tonight?" jaja!  Everything started out good, but then things also started out good with the chica in Cucuta and you know that turned out.  Anyway at some point in the discoteca the girl, who lives like an hour away, asked if it's okay for her to spend the night at my hotel.  Score!!  Well that still isn't a 100% guarantee I'm getting laid, but it's pretty damn close to it.  So we drink it up and dance the night away.  Sure enough the dj played a vallenato set and everybody started loudly singing all the words to the song just like they do in Colombia jaja!  I'm all the way in Caracas and I still can't get away from vallenato music.  Well the name of the club is actually called Vallenato's Sports Bar, I think.

So we finished the bottle around 3am and we were all ready to go.  For some reason the girls came up with the idea of us going to a hotel close to where we were at I guess so the guy didn't have to drive too far to take me back to my hotel.  I didn't mind as long as I was still getting laid jaja!  So we tried a couple of hotels and they were all filled up, no vacancies so the guy had to take me and my chica back to my hotel.  There weren't any vacancies at my hotel either so to be nice I told them they could crash in my room even though that probably would've blocked me from scoring.  I think the couple were trying to be alone so they just dropped us off and I guess carried on looking for a place to spend the night.  The night ended up being a complete success if you know what I mean jaja!  She left the next morning then came back in the afternoon for a few hours before going home back to Charallave which is pretty far from the city.  This girl is very cool and seems to be very into me.  She's 28 with two kids, works in a restaurant, and comes from a very humble background.  I don't think I'm going to keep seeing her very often since I don't want her to think we're something serious, but she's super fun to hang out with.  Oh yea saturday morning before she left my hotel she asked me for some money to get something to eat so I gave her 10k bolivares which is about 4 dollars, so I don't know if that's normal or what.  I don't know if that makes her a prepago or golddigger, but whatever.  When she showed up at my hotel later that evening she had some new clothes that she'd bought for her kids at the mall.  This girl is super horny so it was kinda difficult to try to figure out the money situation.

Today I just kinda wondered around the city, still learning my way around.  Starting tomorrow my sole focus is going to be opening a Venezuelan bank account because that's the only way I'm going to be able to stay in Caracas.  With a Venezuelan bank account I'll be able to use bitcoin to change my money and I won't have to go all the way to Colombia to hit the atm.  If I'm not able to open a Venezuelan bank account this week then I'm going to have to move to San Cristobal because the bus ride to Caracas is too dangerous.  This last time I think I came close to getting taken in by the "Guardia Nacional".  That sh*t was a little too scary for me.  San Cristobal is just easier for me logistically, at least until I have a Venezuelan bank account.

I'm kinda glad that the wifi at this hotel only works in the reception/lobby area because, Jesus Christ, I'm seeing some HOT Venezolanas coming and going, whew!!

Here are some pics I snapped today where I wandered to this shopping mall which might be the coolest shopping mall I've ever seen.  It's super nice, open air set up looking out at Mt Avila in the background.  I think it's call San Ignacio.

I got a buddy who's letting me use his atm card to pay for stuff instead of having to lug around huge stacks of cash, and he has a friend who's going to rent me a furnished apartment.  My buddy is a student at the university UCV and tonight we're going to a party of some of his friends from school.  Things are mostly going good so far, just dealing with bank accounts, bitcoin accounts which are a pain in the arse, to be able to exchange my money on the "black market".  I've been learning A LOT about Venezuela and the situation here.  A few days ago a couple of off duty cops/soldiers were stabbed to death by some street kids in a robbery attempt, and this morning when I was on my way to meet up with this really nice pretty girl for coffee and English practice a guy was shot in the leg at the metro station right by where I was at.  The girl I was hanging out with is a physical therapy student finishing up her last year of university and she says as soon as she receives her degree she's leaving to Spain.  I think I'm going to learn a lot tonight at the party, supposedly the group of friends who will be there are affiliated with some student political club and they'll most likely be talking about politics and the government, so we'll see how it goes.

Well the party ended up being at a bar/club so no politics discussions but a lot of rumba.  I just got home.  Had an awesome time.  The place was full of super hot chicks.  I didn't really get anything going with any girls but I have a great social circle going.  Everybody loves the gringo and these Venezuelans party hard.  The girl who spent the night with me last friday night has been calling the last couple days wanting to see me but I've been blowing her off, telling her I'm too busy to hang out.  I don't want her to get too attached to me.  Man I'm super tired.  One thing's for sure I freaking love Venezuela!

There is a border row between Colombia and Venezuela.. You might be stuck there permamently.
You might create an internacional incidente looking for your "Rumbas"

That "border row" won't affect me in any way.  I shouldn't have to go back to Colombia any time soon.  The only reason I was going to go to Colombia was to hit the atm, but I've found better, easier, safer ways to exchange my money here in Caracas.

That party last night was pretty great, seriously hot chicks everywhere.  The group of people I was with were all university students who were throwing a going away party for a friend who was leaving the country to live in Andorra, some tiny country on the border of Spain and France.  I talked to this other guy who was planning to study his final year of his mechanical engineering degree in Torino Italy, then stay to live and work in Italy.  He has a EU passport due to his family originally being from Portugal.  That seems to be the ongoing theme here, people who get their university degree then leave the country.  I think that's pretty sad, all the young educated people are leaving the country.  Who the heck is going to stay in Venezuela and work?  Well, anyway I made friends with a lot of good people last night.  Hopefully I'll be moving into my own apartment soon.  I'm getting tired of staying in this hotel.

I actually went to the teleferico today with my buddy, but I didn't bring my id with me so we went all the way there for nothing because they require id to ride the teleferico.  I think tomorrow my buddy wants to take me to Tovar which is some German village up in the mountains.  He was there yesterday helping film some video of some chefs who make some special type of smoked pork and sausage.  He said they make some really good artesenal craft beers, so I might go out there to pig out and drink some beer.

Well dont tell the Mech.Eng. to go to Canadá cuz there are no jobs for Canadians with ME degrees from the best Universities in Canadá.

Unless he likes delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut.

Same situation in Houston.

We can always use hot Latinas from Any country in the stripper bars though.

On what are you basing your assertion that there are no me jobs in Canada or Houston?

I did a quick search for me jobs in those two locales and came up with 3500 job openings in Canada and 834 job openings in Houston on the website indeed.com.

So was your post serious or are you just trolling as usual?

And what do you care about hot chicks in strip bars?  You don't even go to strip bars.

Because I am a mechanical Engineering with 35 years expereince and have friends wit 20 years experience who have been laid off and cant get work.

Big deal tou did a search and came up with these openings. There are 10 to 20 guys with 10 years pertinent experience applying for each and every One of those positions.

I have a friend, Chicano like you, Texas A&M grad, 20 years ME and project management experience, was laid off, and been out of work for 3 months And is going to Kazakhstan to work.
I am.pretty sure it is the same in Europe.
A foreign graduaste, without Any experience is SOL.

Your friend better get used to driving taxis and delivering pizzas.

I have to admit, you have a lot more experience with strippers than I do, so I bow to your expertos as far as strippers go. But Any thing else, you are the troll expert.

Just my 2 cents, and this isn't me agreeing with either one of you. Expat I think you're misinterpreting the job market in Houston a bit. There are plenty of ME jobs...BELIEVE ME. I have three friends, recently graduated (the soonest would be in December) who majored in ME and were employed within 3 months of walking across the stage in Houston. Here's what you're missing. Your Aggie buddy is older, wants $120+, probably has a wife and kids (which means more expensive benefits), wants some kind of retirement perks, life insurance, etc. The people I know are in their mid 20's and are completely fine with half that salary to start off and very minimal benefits. They're sharp, have had several internships and can learn on the fly. This is the job market these days in the IT and engineering fields. My recommendation would be to tell you friend to go get a couple of masters degrees and/or certs and start looking for ways to make himself a lot more marketable. At his age, simple experience isn't going to cut it anymore and he should be looking for upper management positions anyway....where he would be mentoring people like the three I just told you about.

I just got 2 more certs last year to land the job I have now after the oil industry chewed me up and spit me out. And I'm studying for another one. I'm in my mid 30's by the way, but even now I can see the light at the end of my career tunnel. There's only so much longer I'm going to be able to demand 6 figures. Truth be told, computers will be programming themselves for the most part in another decade...which is why I'm already looking to open my own business(es). Rules of the game these days. Tell your friend to catch up.

I was talking more about the oil and gas and Energy industry. Thats where my friend works.

And I know Houston is more diversified than that, and the US in general is way more industrialized than Canada.

At my friends age (late 40s I think), it would better serving to go on a tax reduced assignment to Kazakhstan for a year or 2 until things picks up, or he gets something in a transfereable industry like Petrochemicals, what with Exxon spending $20 billion there over next few years and whatever.

Going back to University doesnt always pay back, as you are out of the job market, and spending money.

A lot of extra learning can be done "on the job" and late at night.

A lot of young guys depend too much on computers, and soon forget thier "basic principles" they learned in engineering school. I have seen it over and over.

Like Computers were supposed to eliminate jobs. They seem to create more jobs, because people want more acurate numbers, and want to investigate more and more "alternate scenarios".

And someone with common sense and basic knpwledge still has to analyze the results.

In Canada reight now,the only industry is laundered Chinese mafia money

How do you know what the Venezuelan authorities care about?  Do you have some inside information about the way the Venezuelan authorities operate?  You posted some completely irrelevant article about some Venezuelan cops chasing some guys into Colombia as if that HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING AT ALL.  That's the definition of trolling.  90% of your posts consist of you posting dumb sh*t solely for the sake of posting dumb sh*t.

It's really all about one's willingness to adapt and improve upon themselves. Especially for those approaching middle age. A Masters doesn't have to be a risk, nor do you have to take off of work to get one. Not any more. There are literally thousands of Master's programs at hundreds of institutions built especially for full time working adults, and Master's degrees are the easiest degrees to get grants, scholarships and loans for. There's also plenty of literature online with very informative and up-to-date information about which engineering and IT niches are in highest demand. It's just a question of whether or not someone wants to put the effort in. Unfortunately, more times than not, a middle aged adult that busted their a$$ in college to get a technology degree then honed their skills with 15+ years of hands-on experience isn't ecstatic about going through that entire process again. But that's the world we live in. Professionals with degrees start their careers in their mid-20's and about every 10 years they need to be combining their work experience with some effort to further their education to remain marketable.

When I graduated with my Bachelors my first job was as an assistant database manager for $45K a year. You couldn't tell me I wasn't rich! LMAO!!!! But since then, I have been a database admin, a Logistics Coordinator, an Implementation Project Manager, a software developer, a Systems Analyst and a Business Consultant. Each job paying a little more than the last and demanding a little more education and experience. All this while most of the guys I know have been doing the same thing since they left college, laid off every five years, wondering why their financial situation hasn't changed as they do exactly the same thing every single day.

You mentioned engineering software. That's actually a perfect example of what I'm talking about. You know who writes that software? Ex-engineers with real world experience that went back to school or double-majored in Computer Science, Software Development or Application Systems to begin with. These guys are in super high demand and their starting salaries would give anyone a moment a pause. But try to convince an engineer to take a semester of CS prerequisites, and spend 18 months earning a Masters in Engineering Application Systems. I know everyone is not in the position to do what I'm talking about. Life happens....kids, mortgages, divorces...I get it. But to suggest there's not an alternative to Kazakhstan is a little far fetched IMHO.

I was walking around the west side of Caracas today when I passed by this old guy in a wheel chair who I heard him ask me to push him a little way.  I thought he meant 20 or 30 feet down the sidewalk, I ended up pushing him like 10 blocks!  I figured it would be easy to push him a few feet but then he kept asking to push him a little bit further and I had trouble understanding him.  So by the time I'd already go about two blocks I just kept going because I didn't want to just bail on him and leave him just sitting in some random place lol.  Then he lit up a cigarette and was blabbering about how he lost his house and the government screwed him over somehow while I was pushing him uphill.  Then finally we got to some apartment building he said he lived in and he looked back at me and said "estas sudando bastante".  I felt like telling him "yea thanks to you for conning me into pushing your old ass all the way over here".  He still thanked me and was polite though.

There are these two Mexican guys from Tijuana at my hotel and I've been hanging out with them a lot, basically because we see each other every day and we're all foreigners.  They made friends with some hot Venezuelan girls from out of town who are staying at the same hotel and one of the girls scored a couple of joints for me.  These guys are cool but they move a little bit too fast for me.  They dress kinda flashy and one of them is real cocky and all they talk about are picking up chicks and partying.  The girls they made friends with are kind of hoodratish/ratchet and I'm trying to explain to these guys to be careful of who they associate with because you never know what could happen.  They've been trying to get me to go out with them which seemed like a good idea at first but I think I'm going to have to pass for now.  I don't want to get into a jam behind someone else's behavior or carelessness, I create enough problems on my own.  There's no need to compound my risk by teaming up with young, cocky, flashy foreigners.  Screw that.  They're here for work so their job keeps them pretty busy which is the good thing about them.  And to be honest I'm just a tiny bit jealous that those chicks chose them to latch onto because I had already tried flirting with both of those girls and I got nowhere jaja.  Oh well I'll get over it jaja!  These guys are saying they're going to follow the girls to another hotel downtown that is nicer but the same cost, and they're telling me to move with them which of course I'm not going to do.  These guys give me the heebee jeebees... or maybe it's just the reefer making me paranoid jaja!!

Why don't the three of you take this thread into your very own room and call it 'piss, oil and economics'?

Because if it's remotely meant to be some kind of wacky trip report, it certainly isn't catching any traction from the larger membership here....

It seems to be catching plenty of traction from you since you're one of the main contributors to the thread.

I just got in from drinking with some new friends in a Chinese restaurant/bar.  There are a lot of Chinese people in Caracas!  Had a good time and I think this one girl who was there wants me but she waited until I was getting dropped off to ask how to reach me on fb.  I'm sure I'll bump back into her now that we have friends in common.  My social circle is growing rapidly.  Now excuse me while I puff on this doobie and crash ou for the nightt.  ;)

Things are kind of shaky right now here in Caracas.  The supreme court just dissolved the congress and there will probably be protests all weekend.  I'm in the process of trying to rent an apartment and all this political crap is going on.  Awesome is not happy.

Well it appears that the supreme court has backtracked and reversed it's decision to dissolve the congress.  Everything seems to be back to normal in the city.

The guy who's renting me the apartment is dragging his feet saying he needs to have a contract written up.  I told him what do we need a contract for?  I pay you the money, you give me the keys, and we shake hands like gentlemen.  He's saying we'll meet on monday so I guess he realizes that a contract is just a waste of time.

As an apartment owner myself, I would never rent to someone without  a contract. What recourse do you have Awesome if he just takes more money and does not deliver on the apartment?   What if he decides to double the rent after you were there only a month?

Is your position that a contract in a third world country is worthless?  Is that why you don't care?

I don't care about a contract because I trust the guy and with or without a contract he still needs to trust me as well.  All I have to do as a renter is pay the rent on time and not tear the place up or steal anything.  All he has to do as a landlord is fix something if it stops working; plumbing, appliances, electricity, wifi.  Do you really think I would waste my time suing somebody in Venezuelan court?

Another thing is that he's charging me in USD, which I don't blame him due to inflation of Venezuelan money.  So in a sense he will be increasing the rent on me, if you think in terms of Venezuelan money.

It's a small 1 bedroom apartment, furnished, with cable/wifi.  And the rent price is very low compared to prices in the US.

How long do you plan on living there and what are you doing for work?

Right now I'm looking at being here for at least 3-6 months.  I'm just living off of savings mostly but I have some affiliate marketing money coming in that I'm working on increasing that cash flow.

Just when I was ready to give up on my apartment guy he came by today and we went to go see the apartment.  So hopefully some time this week I won't be homeless anymore.  He agrees that we're better off doing business with a handshake.  Leases in Venezuela give way too much power to the tenant.  If he somehow screws me over which I know he won't do I'll just find him and kick his ass jaja!

Well the protests went down today and guess who was right in the middle of the action jaja!  I'd heard about what was going on that the metro was closed today because of the protests happening around Plaza Venezuela.  So I figured I'd mosey on over there and scope out the scene.  Man I've never seen so many cops in my life.  I walked over to one area where a bunch of protesters were running up getting ready to start throwing rocks at the cops and then the smoke grenades came flying at us and everybody took off running choking on the tear gas.  I saw one crazy b@stard pick up one of the smoke grenades and throw it right back at the cops jaja!  Man when everybody took off running I was like Neon Deon Sanders I was GONE sprinting full speed.  Talk about an adrenaline rush whoa!!!

Protests still going on today.  Most of the metro stops are closed.  I think today was the biggest day of protests so far.  I don't know how long they're going to keep this up.  My Mexican buddy met some lady in the hotel restaurant who's cousin is the manager of a bank and we went today to open up bank accounts on the other side of town.  It took us hours to get back to our hotel.  Most of the roads are blocked, either by the police or by the protesters.  Then while walking back to our hotel we saw a bunch of people running so we took off sprinting for a bout a block, eyes watering from the pepper gas.  I'll be glad when this protest crap is over.

Protests STILL going on today.  Oh my god this crap is getting annoying.  I can't hardly leave my hotel without having to walk around massive police blockades and breathing in pepper/tear gas.  One cool thing is that I'm noticing that Venezuela has a lot of hot attractive female police officers.

Another thing that I'm starting to realize is that in Venezuela the sayings "anything's possible but nothing's for sure" and "things are never what they seem" hold very true here.  One thing I'm trying to figure out is that if these people are so fed up with "Chavismo" and the current government, what exactly do they they think the alternative is going to be?  Things must have bee severely f*cked up prior to Hugo Chavez taking power with his "socialist revolution", so if the opposition is successful at regaining control away from the socialists, who's to say things won't get worse than they are now?

Another interesting thing that I've noticed is that while in Colombia and most latam countries it's the poor brown people who are usually protesting against the government, here in Venezuela it's the opposite.  It's the rich white people who are outside in droves protesting against the government.

Random thought, I think Venezuelans are too greedy and too shortsighted to be socialists.  Another thing, a working socialist system requires that people actually follow rules, and following rules doesn't seem to be something that Venezuelans are very good at.  They run red lights right in front of cops.  If you think people drive crazy in Colombia, in Venezuela it's worse.  The people that the government puts in charge to run things just end up stealing everything and selling it on the "black market".  So instead of the price controls providing cheaper food like they're intended to do, it backfires on them and the food ends up being more expensive.

Another thing I've noticed is nobody seems to be in a hurry to do anything.  You have to wait, and wait, and wait for everything.  My apartment guy I assume is still going to rent me the apartment but he's just taking his sweet time.  Right now he's out of town on vacation, but last week he said he needed to have the place cleaned before I could move in.  I told him don't worry about it I'll clean it myself because I had a feeling it was going to take forever.  Here we are it's been almost 3 weeks since he first told me he'd rent me the apartment, and who knows how much longer he's going to drag his feet.  I'm not too worried about it because I found a SWEET hotel "suite" that's just like an apartment right in the heart of the city.  My two Mexican buddies from TJ are next door.  These bastards are constantly running out of money and asking me to loan them money so they can buy food, wtf lol!  But thanks to one of them I now have my own bank account, but get this, I have the debit card to make atm withdrawals but I have to wait A WEEK for my account to become "afiliado" which I guess means activated in their system just so that I can transfer money into the account!!  WHY THE F*CK IS EVERYTHING SO FREAKING SLOW IN THIS COUNTRY??!!

Oh and my buddy who's letting me use his atm card is STEALING FROM ME!  I guess he thought I was stupid and I wouldn't notice that he was taking (MY) money out of the account.  I told him about it and he's coming up with all of these lame excuses.  When he gets back from vacation I'm going to have a talk with him in person just so I can see if he has the nerve to look me in the eyes and lie to me to my face.  Oh but other than that everything's peachy.

Venezuela has the best hamburgers I've ever tasted in my life.  The hamburgers in Mexico and Colombia are crap compared to the hamburgers in Venezuela.  And the have this sauce called "salsa de maiz", which is basically some corn flavored sauce.  Oh my god that stuff is beyond delicious.  And even though I complain about some things about Venezuelans they really are super super nice people, most of them.  It amazes me how far they'll go out of their way to help a stranger.
