No, they never saw it coming. Lol. Now in with the next guy to loot the country. I don't know if you have ever seen a Colombian voters ballot - there will be 25 or 30 candidates for a seat in the camera. All of them vying for the chance to loot.

Yep  Colombia is corrupt.  But life is WAY WAY better than in socialist Venezuela where the socialists have expropriated, looted and stole everything.

Problem with Uribe he didnt finish the job, like Fujimora in Peru and Pinochet in Chile did.The 2 countries Latin América  with economies which have improved the most in the last 30 years

Unfortunately, thats how things work in Latin América. It It aint Kansas (or Nova Scotia)

I used to look forward to visiting Argentina and Venezuela. When things were very different, my parents loved it there---European sophistication,  with L.A. flavor, etc.

But it's gone to hell and US citizens aren't too welcome anyway.

If Uribe, Fujimoro and (gasp) Pinochet, with their corruption,  paramilitaries, narcotics trade involvement, torture and murderous histories are positive examples to you, that's saying something....

Soooooo, who are on your list of 'bad' guys?

I mean, post WWI, Hitler was the best thing in decades for Germany's economy. Oh, and he certainly tried to 'finish the job' too, even working up his "final solution"!

Didn't work out long term but hey, a lot his honchos escaped to S. America, where they provided role models for the people you write as bringing 'improvement' to the area.

Not saying they were "good guys..just saying better than the "alternatives"...

Uribe and Fujimori never uses Nazis as role models.Dont even think Pinochet did.

You are thinking of Stroesner in Paraguay

As for the "better" people you admire, these were the FIRST hits that came up in a momentary search using my phone, on Google:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/colombiareports.com/the-far-right-in-colombia/amp/

"""The far right’s most prominent representative in contemporary politics is former President Alvaro Uribe, who is investigated by the Supreme Court for allegedly forming a death squad and on multiple occasions has opposed the rule of law."""

https://newrepublic.com/article/151599/dont-talk-perus-forced-sterilizations

"""Under former President Fujimori, over 200,000 women were violated—one of the largest such projects since Nazi Germany. His party is still in power""---""Last week, Peru’s supreme court overturned the pardon of brutal Peruvian ex-President Alberto Fujimori, tossing the leader back to his 25-year prison sentence for human rights violations and corruption. Human rights groups, outraged when Fujimori was pardoned by former-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Christmas Eve last year, reportedly as part of a backroom deal to save his doomed presidency, are understandably ecstatic. Yet as the reversal is welcomed by Amnesty International, and splashed across international headlines, one of Fujimori’s less-discussed and most appalling legacies is still missing...."

Not to mention how he really didn't seem to mind in the slightest Maoist 'Shining Path' rebels furthering his work by conveniently slaughtering tens of thousands of Peruvians.

As for Pinochet, there's not enough room here to find a place to discuss your third "better" leader here, but anyhow, here's a start:

Chile and the Nazis: From Hitler to Pinochet
Leonard, Thomas M. Journal of Third World Studies; Americus Vol. 21, Iss. 2,  (Fall 2004): 264-266.

So, those are your first string team, who's your secondary favorite line consist of?

Look at the source of those articles.

Colombia Reports is the most left wing  biased Colombian English news source  there is.

Sure there were lots of Atrocities by the Paracos (and the guerillas as well)  when Uribe  was in power. But linking them all to him directly is a real stretch.

The New Republic is an old fAlt Left rag.

Here is what they thought of Unvcle Joe..assasin of 10s of milions of his own people; (from Wikepedia)

One consequence of World War I was the Russian Revolution of 1917. During the inter-war years the magazine was generally positive in its assessment of the Soviet Union and Joseph Stalin. It changed its position with the start of the Cold War in 1947, and the 1948 departure of leftist editor Henry A. Wallace to run for president on the Progressive ticket. After Wallace, TNR moved toward positions more typical of mainstream American liberalism"

The most successful societies employ both Socialist and Capitalist strategies. Stratification is a prime example of a Socialist strategy in Colombia wherein the cost public services is tiered according to income level (not individually of course but according to barrio). What fun for the rich and what horror for the poor if people from estrato 6 Ciudad Jardin payed the same for electric, water and gas as the people from estrato 1 barrio Manuela Beltran in Cali. Just wouldn't work so it's a very good thing that the Socialist derived stratification system is in place and functioning alongside all of the Capitalist strategies. Pure Capitalism might be very nice for the winners but what do you do with a population (the majority of Colombians who earn Salary Minimo) that has virtually no opportunity for economic upward mobility...

true but unfortunately, ive seen families in the poor barrios just waste water and elect like it was no big deal. all the lights on in every room, multiple tv's on and only one person in the house, or when they leave, lights are left on. 45 minute showers ect.  still have to understand, resources dont last forever.

Apparently Venez, Prez Maduro has completely shut the border with Brazil and now is preparing to also shut the border with Colombia entirely.

Meanwhile, he insists there's 'no crisis'.....
