Some Thai facts
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:43:52 AM »
Thailand has a language based in sanskrit- 44 characters, most with multiple tonal variations. There are 5 major language variations in Thailand based on geographics. I remember learning pure thai and being absolutely lost in the northwest where they speak a thai burmese mix.

Thailand has a king who has been in power since 1947. The ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty.

The European powers have tried to carve up Thailand for over 100 years- most recently as 1945. The 5th king was and is revered even though he lost half the country because he saved the other half from the English and the French.

Thailand was Siam until the mid-1930's when a military dictator ordered the name changed after a power grab.

The King and I is not a movie ever shown in Thailand because it is culturally insensitive and insults the King and culture.

Thailand is approximately 95 percent Buddhist, 3 percent Muslim, and 2 percent other religions.
